Welcome

Welcome to the new blog - Honoring Our Cherokee Ancestors.

It is my desire to post the true history of the Cherokee people, with biographies, facts about historical events and possible reasons why our ancestors made choices they did - from every perspective.

Cherokee history is rich with spirituality, love, family and peace, but also war, betrayal, suffering, death and rebirth. The Cherokee, along with the Choctaw, Muskogee Creek, Seminole and Chickasaw - the Five Civilized Tribes - were forcibly removed from their homelands in the east on what was called the Trail of Tears, relocated to Indian Territory, now known as Oklahoma.

This blog will feature articles about old homesteads - some still standing, gravesites of ancestors, influential people who made their mark in Cherokee history and important events that brought the Cherokee Nation to where it is today.

The first article will be posted Friday, July 11.

I welcome all comments, questions and suggestions for blog articles. Profanity will not be tolerated.

  1. Karen, I am excited for your effort and excited to see the stories! Making it even better will be sources, documents, and photos used to support the stories, helping them come to life as much as possible. I know you'll do a wonderful job of "Honoring (y)Our Cherokee Ancestors". I've bookmarked your blog and will be checking in frequently!

  3. My question is WHY, when this is already done with a number of pages most notable being this one https://www.facebook.com/groups/253966649014/ With David Cornsilk and Twila Barnes contributing documentation of historical; and cultural fact, to a lil over 3,000 members, with them contributing their stories as well, how can this page improve upon that page!!

    1. It can't. It won't. One droppers at work doing what they slam Twila for.

    2. John, there is more than one history teacher, more than one artist, more than one musician. Why can there not be more than one story teller? Why do you think Twila and David are the only ones who should tell the history of our people?

Sandee, My blog will not include speculation as fact, so no, I won't be doing what Twila does. And your racist remarks won't affect me either. I am proud to be Cherokee and proud of my German heritage as well.

  4. They failed at trying to be David, now y'all trying to be Twila lol

    1. That's funny, Sandee. I never wanted to be David, I do not want to be Twila. I will be me always. I am a published writer, with almost four years of experience writing feature stories for the local newspaper. My genealogy research may not be as skilled as Twila and David, but I do alright!

  8. Okie Dokie, we shall see, there are just like the many wannabe Cherokee, many wannabe historians, and this what you are saying you will push...And there are a few Cherokee story tellers, but in order to not be a wannabe story teller one must know Cherokee History and Culture, and the only way is to have lived it, historical book lurnin or face-book lurnin works, but is actually inconsequential as real life, just BS!!

BTW Karen when did you discover your Cherokeeness, or was you born into and lived it, this is what will determine your success as another blogin Twila!!??

    1. John, why don't you ask Twila what she knows about Cherokee History, she has never lived it and she didn't get her card until about 2010, so you are kind of calling the kettle black, and making yourself look like a fool...

    2. lots of people, Cherokee, over-nighters, and even the nons, have written about Cherokee history with their own personal 'slant' and purpose. Karen hasn't even started and yet those with issues pop up to try and discourage her. Karen's a strong Cherokee woman with skills and heart to do a great job. She knows she doesn't need to 'compete' with anyone else to be her own, fabulous, stand-alone teller of authentic Cherokee stories that speak for themselves through documents, story-tellers of old, and the Cherokee who, like her, also lived as Cherokee.
I am proud to know her and truly look forward to seeing and reading the stories she'll tell.

    3. John, you really don’t know me or my background. You only know what you perceive of me from Facebook conversations. I won’t defend myself to you, for your opinion isn’t the end all/be all of my ambitions.

I was a Cherokee history teller before Facebook came along, in the early 2000s on the now defunct Suite101. I did learn the history and culture, by spending time with my half-blood great-grandfather and my dear Aunt Lucy. I grew up knowing I was of Cherokee descent.

I’m not “another blogin Twila” – I am me. Give me a chance and you will see.

  9. John the same exact total same thing could be said of Twila but since you like her she gets a free pass from you. I find your strong opinions very arbitrary so get off your high horse.

  10. Maybe maybe not, I don't personally know Twila to like or dislike her, just as I don't know your status as a Cherokee that was why I ask, but I do know her parents live here in the middle of CNO land, and I have heard her describe how her mother lives and where and sure sounds Cherokee to me!

    1. Wow John you really don't know anything, her mother didn't grow up there and just moved back there about a year ago, and her father is not Cherokee. Wow just Wow....

  11. Simple fact of the matter Donna Smith the words of a fullblood wannabe are totally inconsequential to facts of the matter...

Well Karen as I said I don't know you, but it does sound like you may have some real Cherokee life experiences, but you are known to hang out, WWW wise with some real fruitloops and some are posting here, so just have to wait and see what happens... Cherokee people need all the learning we can get, some of us could be called clueless!!

As an example myself, I am a Cherokee born to Cherokee parents in 1935 when there was no Cherokee Nation or CNO, and lived my younger life among family members up to the 50's here in Cherokee land of Oklahoma...The Army in 1953 beginning my life away from what I was born into and as for history of my People I was clueless...All I knew about was what happened around me at the time, we had no transportation to even get to the ceremonial grounds to learn about that aspect of Cherokee life, I knew it existed but not what they were or entailed!

    1. Clueless you are to this day about many of us. I was born to a Cherokee father (an original Dawes enrollee) in 1945 in a small community in Muskogee County. My Dad knew that his grandmother was Cherokee and came west over a water route. He attended traditional Cherokee events and understood the language although we spoke English at home. I remember those who only spoke Cherokee or Creek in my uncle's store just up the street from our house. Yet you and your son attack my Dad and me because of our perceived BQ. I grew up with Cherokees and my classes in school had more Cherokees than not. You don't know me and frankly, I don't care to know you but I would appreciate you to stop using my name in your careless, nonsense remarks on your biased facebook group. You, your son and Twila Barnes will never speak for all Cherokees! Wado!

    2. Dear John, it's one thing to speak of facts that you know of (yourself) and it's yet another to blather on about things AND PEOPLE you don't know; however, even you are entitled to your opinion - and that's all it is.

It's clear you don't really know many people and instead of waiting to see the work that Karen will do, you try to distract and deflect away from the purpose of this particular blog with speculation, tall tales, and trash-talk towards those who ARE excited and interested in this blog.

The world is full of sad and unhappy people who only speak negatively of things they're afraid of and don't understand. I truly, truly look forward to reading THIS blog because it will NOT be an "opinion rag", it will have substance.

      Until the first story .....

    3. I wouldn't trade my "fruitloop" friends for anything in the world. They stood beside me as I went through my cancer scare, surgery and chemo and are still standing beside me while I struggle to come to grips with all the loss in my life over the past year and a half.

Don't worry about who my friends are or who supports this blog, just read the articles and decide for yourself whether it's worth your time or not. I really do hope you enjoy the articles. Everyone has a story or two to tell.

  13. The first story hasn't even made it out yet and people are throwing things at the fan. I wonder why? Reminds me of all the garbage about Robin Smith before she was ever approved for the position and she serves with 3 other people . It's like jumping on the freight train and not knowing where you are going......it's just one of many trains .....
